Advocate Profile: Alisa Mcconnell

Image of Alisa and her teacher, Shanda, on graduation day when Alisa graduated culinary school.

What is your favorite memory/ moment that brought you lots of joy? Being able to speak to my deaf clients at Civitan Services in Bryant

What is something people generally don’t know about you? I love cats!!!! Plus I want to have one in my home someday

Who is Alisa? I would have to say Temple Grandin. I have the same disability as her.

What gets your fired up about the disability movement? When people fight for the rights of people who have disability’s .

What is your advocacy platform? My YouTube channel called The Alikat Vlogs

What barriers or challenges do you face in this movement? I don’t have any challenges I just want people to hear what I have to say and help me act on it.

What do you want those who do not identify with disability to know? We are just like you we just need a bit of help and understanding .

What areas are you still growing/hope to grow? Personally? Professionally? To be able to find the job of my dreams and do YouTube as a job.

Who was the person/role model who inspired you to look into disability advocacy? Why/how did they inspire you? I would have to say Temple Grandon because not only does she have the same disability as I do but she helps me understand things in a way that normal people will not be able to and the reason why I started my advocacy is because I wanted to change peoples view on how people view people with disabilities because whenever you ask they just think that we are nobody but I want them to think that we are something and that we deserve to be included in what they have to say and also what they do.

When people look at you/up to you, what do you hope they see? I won’t be able to see and say that I can be a role model for people because I want to be that voice in that fighter that can basically show others that even though you have a disability you can have your own home you can have your own job you can be able to work and you can have safe transportation to and from work I want people to see that and that’s important to me. What are your next steps? I have one in the works but I can’t say it yet

How do we follow you?! The Alikat Vlogs on youtube
